The blackness at the center of the songs of Chelle Rose was less spiritual, more existential. Rose possesses one of the best voices in country music, a wiseass drawl perfect for kissing off bad boyfriends and extolling the virtues of a good stiff drink. That voice was central to her set on Wednesday; stripped back to only acoustic guitar and some loping electric provided by guitarist Sergio Webb. Her cover of Julie Milller’s “I Need You” was a particular highlight, Rose’s hard lean into the vowels making for a wonderfully peculiar enunciation of the word “You.”  View Article >
